Schloss Weitra is the home of the Association for the Documentation of Contemporary History, an association devoted to the documentation of the aspects of 20th century history which led to the division of Europe after the Second World War and demise of democracy in countries behind the Iron Curtain. The permanent exhibition Schauplatz ‘Eiserner Vorhang’ gives visitors the experience of a journey along the former Iron Curtain and see what it was like to live on both sides of the barrier which divided Germany and, until 1955, Austria. The journey is rounded off by historical pictorial material, numerous time witness interviews and documentation about the resistance against the communist regimes.
