This museum was founded in 1927 by Hofrat Hugo Steiner and then integrated into the Austrian National Library in 1929. The ‘world language’ Esperanto was created by Ludvik Zamenhof in 1887 as a way for people of different nationalities to communicate effectively, although it has never caught on in a big way. Showing the history of the language and a multitude of books printed in Esperanto, the exhibits also present other artificial and obscure languages such as Romance, Stark Deutsch, Neuslawisch and Klingon! There is also a linguistic research library for language planning.
