This is one of the greatest treasuries in the world and contains some of the finest jewellery in Europe. There are some exquisite examples of medieval craftsmanship and exhibits include the crown jewels of the Habsburgs and the Holy Roman Empire. The pièce de résistance is the Byzantine Imperial Crown, dating from 962. Covered with emeralds, sapphires, diamonds, and rubies, this priceless treasure was taken by Hitler but returned by the American army. The Holy Lance, once believed to have pierced the side of Christ, and the 9th century saber of Charlemagne are amongst this breathtaking collection of treasures.
