The ‘Hofmobiliendepot was established in 1747 by Empress Maria Theresa in order to furnish the residences and palaces of the Habsburgs. As a repository for furniture no longer in fashion and with thousands of stored items it became one of the world’s largest museums of furniture and furnishings. Exhibits include Crown Prince Rudolf’s ebony high-chair, scallop-shell cot and funeral crown, Maximilian of Mexico’s serpent walking stick and enormous sombrero as well as candelabra’s, coat-stands and commodes. There is an exhibition on Viennese cabinet-making and interior design with Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffmann all represented.
