The precise origins of Wels castle, built to protect the surrounding agricultural area, are not known but it is first documented in 885, although at this time it was probably rather than stone wooden structure. The castle was remodelled in the early 13th century and later incorporated in the city fortifications. Substantial changes, under the Emperor Maximilian I, took place between 1508 and 1514 and define the present appearance of the castle complex although additions were made in the 19th century. The Emperor Maximilian I died here in 1519. The castle passed into the hands of the City of Wels in 1937 and nowadays houses a number of museums
