The Eisriesenwelt, which was officially discovered towards the end of the 19th century, forms one of the most extensive cave systems in the world. The length of the cave system is 42 kilometres but visitors are restricted to the first kilometre which contains a number of amazing features for example the Great Ice Emabankment which rises to a height of 25 metres and the collection of ice stalactites which is called Frigga’s veil. The approach to the caves involves an ascent, up to an altitude of 1641 metres, from Werfen by bus and cable car which in itself is an amazing experience with excellent view of the Hohenwerfen Fortress.
