This building was constructed in 1868 as a centre for social events and exhibitions for ‘The Association of Austrian Artists Künstlerhaus’. The exhibition program focuses on themed, international and member exhibitions in the fields of painting, sculpting, architecture, applied arts and film. As well as the 2000 sq. metres in the ‘main house’, the ‘house gallery’ and cinema foyer are put aside for members’ and the ‘passage gallery’ for young artists. The 280 person capacity Künstlerhaus Cinema was established here in 1949 and shows, almost exclusively, films of artistic interest as well as the Viennale film festival.
