The house was acquired in the early 17th century by Salome Alt, the mistress of the Archbishop of Salzburg, Wolf Dietrich of Raitenau, and was used by her as a refuge after the Archbishop was imprisoned in Salzburg Castle. The building, formerly known as the "Hoffman’sches Freihaus", was owned in the 16th century by Kaiser Ferdinand I who used it to house his entourage during visits to Wels castle. The house has elegant late Gothic corner bays and a façade showing the cots of arms of members of the Hoffman family who owned it during the second halk of the 16th century.
