Waidhofen an der Ybbs’ Bürgerspitalkirche is the second Gothic church in the town, the first being the parish church. Tradition has it that a hospital was built around 1274 on a site just outside the southern town gate although it is quite possible that an older building existed here before. The present church has two naves, the main one of which is the original Gothic nave and the oldest part of the building. Inside the church is the oldest and most spectacular of Waidhofen’s Christmas cribs which has been added to over the centuries.
