Financed by Anton Gabrielli, who was commissioned to build Vienna’s main water system, the ‘Hochstrahlbrunnen’ was completed in 1873 to commemorate the completion of the engineering project. As well the famous jet in the centre shooting water high into the air, which represents the year, there are four jets on the stone island for the seasons and 365 jets around the edge for the days of the year. The fountain was later improved with dramatic floodlights and the first light-and-water show was given on June 23, 1906.
