The Getreidegasse, which has been a major thoroughfare since Roman times, is Salzburg’s premier shopping street. But, besides the expensive boutiques and elegant hotels, the street has many other claims to fame, as for centuries it was one of the best neighbourhoods in the city. For example, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here in the Hagenauerhaus where his family rented a flat and Salzburg’s first town hall was also situated on the street. Today the street is a popular tourist trap where visitors come to buy souvenirs and browse in the fashionable shops.
