The Gerlhamer Moor, or “Gföhret”, nature reserve is based round the three hundred year old Gerhlam forge which closed commercially in 1997. The nature reserve, lying on a high terrace over 500 metres above sea level, consists of around 15 hectares of natural moor land including meadows, forest, peat bog and agricultural land. The area was extensively exploited for peat extraction by a local brewery until it was given protected status, partly as a result of the discovery of the remains of prehistoric buildings in the peat. The moor is home to a variety of wildlife and flora; frogs, toads, butterflies, stork, heron, songbirds and rare marshland plants such as orchids.
