For five hundred years the Danube was the Roman Empire’s northernmost border. A chain of military camps was established of which the settlement of Cannabiaca, today Zeiselmauer, was one. The original camp was constructed of wood with earthworks but by the 4th century, as a result of intensified development, it consisted of a number of substantial stone buildings with a defensive wall. At the heart of the camp was the command post or principia which contained the flag sanctuary and this can be seen in the crypt of the parish church, a Carolingian hall church which replaced the Roman building.
