The internationally famous painter Egon Schiele was born in Tulln on 12th June 1890 in the railway station. He received recognition during his lifetime despite controversy surrounding his work. A museum devoted to the life and work of the artist was opened in the former prison building of the district court on the one hundredth anniversary of Schiele’s birth in 1990. The museum traces the development of the artist from his earliest childhood works through his period at the Academy in Vienna to his later Expressionist phase. There is a reconstruction of the cell in which he was incarcerated for a time.
