The famous Expressionist painter Egon Schiele was born in Tulln on 12th June 1890 in the railway station, where his father Adolf Schiele was stationmaster. He received international recognition during his lifetime despite controversy surrounding his work. A museum devoted to the life and work of the artist was opened in the former prison building of the district court on the one hundredth anniversary of Schiele’s birth in 1990 and the room where he was born, in the railway station, has been restored to a likeness of what it was at the time of his birth. The room can be visited by prior arrangement.
