The Körnerkasten, or granary, is, in fact, a 4th century late Roman box gate tower which replaced the former eastern gate of the Roman military settlement Cannabiaca. The original entrance can be seen just above ground level adjacent to where the camp wall joined the tower. The building’s rounded corners are characteristic of Roman military architecture of the time. The tower was used from the Middle Ages onwards as a granary and has changed little over the years although a cellar was added in the 16th century. It is one of the largest surviving late Roman buildings in the whole of Austria.
