Named after the Austrian Chancellor and anti-semitic leader of the Christian Socials, this square boasts a host of impressive buildings including Alte Universität, founded by Rudolf IV in 1365. Opposite, the Baroque Academy of Sciences, houses the Freskenraum, occasionally open to the public and showing frescoes by Franz Maulbertsch. The Rococo ‘Aula’, or ‘Great Hall’, on the Western edge, was the site of the premiere of Haydn’s oratorio ‘The Creation’ as well as Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. It is here where Haydn reputedly whispered to Beethoven “What I have started, you will finish”.
