As one of the largest auction houses in central Europe and amongst the world’s leading auctioneers, the Dorotheum, named after the convent of the Dorothean Order which once stood on this spot, hosts about 600 auctions a year. Founded by Emperor Joseph I in 1707, initially as a pawn shop, its new building, the Palais Dorotheum, was designed by architect Emil Ritter von Förster and completed in 1901. With over 40 departments, as well as a gallery and jewellery store, even occasional or first time buyers can browse and consider making a purchase in one of Vienna’s best-known institutions.
