Commissioned in 1737 the ‘Providentia Fountain’ was conceived by Georg Raphael Donner, hence its more common name ‘Donner Fountain’. The central figure, the Goddess of Providence, is deemed to portray the caring and judicious government. The four laughing cherubs which surround and adorn the plinth symbolise the nearby tributaries to the Danube (Enns, Traun, Ybbs and March). Judged obscene and immoral by Empress Maria Theresa the figures were removed but reinstated in 1801. The original, and much decayed, lead figures are on view in the Baroque Museum at the Belvedere Palace, having been replaced in 1873 by bronze replicas.
