The former Augustinian monastery of St. Pölten, dissolved by Emperor Josef II in 1784, was the oldest such establishment in Lower Austria. Its considerable inventory of religious artefacts and the monastic buildings came in to the possession of the diocese. The diocesan museum was established in 1888 in the former monastic library and was eventually extended to encompass other parts of the monastic complex. The objects displayed in the museum include archaeological finds, historical documents, coins, medals, paintings and other works of art. A special feature of the museum is the Gothic sculptures and paintings, some of which came from the cathedral.
