When a relief channel was cut to counter the threats of flooding in the Danube a recreational Mecca was created with the excavation material. The Danube Island is sectioned into three parts with natural areas in the north and south and a park in the centre. With 170 hectares of woodland, over 40 kilometres of beaches and a total area of 1,700 acres, visitors can bathe, run, rollerblade, walk, cycle and sail as well as visit the numerous bars, cafés, restaurants and nightclubs. The Danube Island Festival, Europe’s largest youth party, attracts some 3 million visitors each June.
