The Austrian Kriminalmuseum in twenty rooms of Schloss Scharnstein documents the history of all aspects of criminal justice in Austria, from the Middle Ages to the present. The regional court was held in this castle from 1584 to 1848 and many of the exhibits relate to this long association. In the past evidence was often extracted by torture and the original torture chamber can be seen. There are exhibits showing the evolution of the police force in the form of documents and equipment, including uniforms.
