The Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus laid siege to Weiner Neustadt in 1486 with twenty thousand men as part of his campaign against the Habsburg Emperor Friedrich III. Since no reinforcements arrived on their behalf, on 17th August 1487, the citizen capitulated. Corvinus was generous enough to respect the rights of the citizens and confirm their privileges. He also presented the city with a gilded silver cup – the Corvinusbecher. The treasured beaker can now be seen in the city’s town hall. Allegedly, Joseph Goebbels once drank from the cup during the Nazi domination of Austria.
