The Convent Church of St. Franz of Assisi is situated in what was once Waidhofen’s moat. The city was involved in the conflicts of the Reformation as a result of which, because of a switch by the citizens on the whole to Protestantism, the Catholic congregation were badly served with places to worship. The parish priest persuaded the Capuchin Convent at Steyr to send some brothers the Waidhofen and here they worked in the Hospital church and founded a monastery with its own church. In 1788, as a result of the abolition of the order, the convent closed but its church was reconsecrated in 1833.
