Containing numerous instruments once played by famous musicians and composers, including Haydn and Beethoven, this is one of the most important collections of Renaissance instruments in the world. Some of the more unusual exhibits include a dragon-shaped shawm, a vertically strung clavicytherium and a quadruple music stand. The collection was originally started by Archduke Ferdinand of Tyrol but is continually extended by purchases, donations and loans. The elaborate Marble Hall is sometimes used as a concert venue and also features some interesting items such as a ‘piano of complete harmony’, a Wiener Werkstatte piano and a specially designed harmonium.
