Weitra is one of the cities in lower Austria which has well preserved defensive walls; in fact in this case they are almost complete. The fortifications owe much to the influence of the Kuenringer Hadmar II who founded both the castle and the city at the beginning of the 13th century. The Stadtmauer are, in fact, first mentioned in 1292 and follow the natural contours of the granite outcrop on which the city stands. The mediaeval city had huge military significance but also defended the surrounding villages and, as a result, all citizens in the area were compelled to work on the maintenance of the fortifications
