The 65,000 sq. metres of the Stadtpark opened in 1862 and was designed by court painter Joseph Selleny and garden director Rudolf Siebeck. Various changes, including a cast-iron pavilion and the Children’s park, meant that the final layout was not completed until 1872. The park has numerous monuments and sculptures including those of Franz Schubert, Franz Lehár, Robert Stolz and Hans Makart, the most popular being the gilded bronze monument of Johann Strauss; one of the most photographed attractions in the city.
