The Gothic style Neues Rathaus, Vienna’s municipal administration centre, was designed by German architect Friedrich Schmidt, and was completed in 1883. The 2,804 sq metres of the Arkadenhof, one of the biggest inner courtyards in Europe, along with the Festival Hall, Council Chamber, Senate Chamber and stunning state rooms, host press conferences, concerts and balls, as well as provide employment for over 2000 people. 331 steps take you to the top of the 97.9 metre tower and the Rathausmann; a 5.4 metre, 650 kilo statue of a medieval knight modelled on the armour of Emperor Maximilian.
