The beautiful Cistercian monastery, the best known sight in the Waldviertel, complex of Zwettl can be found two and a half miles from the city. The establishment was founded in 1138 by Hadmar I von Kuenring. Its most striking feature is a ninety metre high church clock tower made from local grey granite and decorated with elaborate statuary. It was designed by Josef Munggenast and Mathhias Steinl in 1727. The interior of the abbey church is a treasure house of Baroque and Gothic art especially the many altarpieces executed by such as Mathhias Goetz, Paul Troger, Martino Altomonte, Johann Bergmueller and master Johannes.
