The Markuskirche stands on the site of the former Ursuline Church which was destroyed on the 16th of July 1669 by a rock fall from the Mönchsberg Mountain, a terrible disaster which killed 220 people. The rebuilding was carried out, starting in 1699, under the direction of the famous Baroque architect J. B. Fischer von Erlach. The church is notable for its for its rich stucco interior, ceiling frescos and magnificent organ built by Matthäus Mauracher and his sons.
