The Propsteikirche of Zwettl, dedicated to St John the Evangelist was built in the 12th century as the family church of the Counts Kuenringen. It is likely that it was constructed at the same time as the long disappeared Zwettl castle. A chapel was added in 1300 and, in the 15th century, an eastern tower. Luckily the building survived the destruction of the castle in 1231. The church complex with its churchyard, the round 13th century charnel house and the Romanesque St. Michael’s chapel, with its beautiful frescos, is a fine assembly of buildings.
