The Institut der Englischen Fräulein, one of a series of similar establishments throughout Central Europe, was founded by Mary Ward in the early 18th century for the instruction girls of noble birth. The building’s Baroque façade is the most notable in St Pölten and possibly in the whole of Lower Austria. The stucco work on the front is possibly the creation of Peter Widerin and Andreas Gruber while Jakob Prandtauer had a hand in the design of the interior. There are outstanding frescos by both Paul Troger and Bartolomeo Altomonte.
