This small cemetery boasts the grave of one of Austria’s most famous painters of the early 20th century. Epitomising the image of the tortured artist with the highly-charged nature of his drawings and paintings, Egon Schiele was buried here in 1918 following his premature death from the Spanish flu epidemic that ravaged Europe. As a protégé of Gustav Klimt he never fulfilled his potential but the interest in his work remains and admirers of his work can visit the grave to pay their respects having seen a fine collection of his work in the Leopold Museum.
