Wiener Neustadt’s magnificent cathedral was developed in two phases beginning with the construction of a Romanesque basilica around 1200. Initial construction took about eighty years and the building was dedicated in 1279 to The Virgin Mary and St. Rupert. The present nave and massive towers date from this development phase as does the remarkable bride gate, or Brauttor, on the south side of the church. The second phase began in the 14th century with the addition of the transepts and choir. The cathedral contains many fine works of art including frescos and an altar piece of the Assumption by Domenico Cignaroli.
