The Salzburg catacombs are to be found in the cemetery of the monastery of St. Peter, at the foot of the Mönchsberg. The catacombs were an early Christian place of worship dating from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD and include the Gothic Gertraudiskapelle, which was consecrated in 1178, and the Maximushöhle, an artificial cave reputedly containing the 5th century AD grave of St. Maximus. The catacombs were used for worship and as an hermitage by the monks of monastery in the Middle Ages.
