The Museum Carolino Augusteum is dedicated history of the city and province of Salzburg. It was founded in 1834 and named after the widow of Emperor Franz. The exhibits span the history of Salzburg from prehistoric times to the present including Celtic findings from local archaeological excavations, Roman mosaics, Gothic sculpture and painting, Baroque painting, musical instruments, furniture and reconstructed interiors. There are also extensive collections of 18th, 19th and 20th century paintings. The Carolino Augusteum is a modern museum suitable for visitors of all ages and backgrounds. In addition to the exhibits from the permanent collections the museum presents special themed exhibitions.
