The Viennese have an obsession with funerals and burials and this rather macabre museum is a fascinating glimpse into their perspective on death. From the 18th century wrought-iron grill at the entrance depicting a crowned skeleton to the reusable, economy class, ‘flap coffin’, where the deceased was dropped into the grave and the coffin recycled, there are all sorts of interesting artefacts. Widow’s mourning attire, lanterns, staffs and liveries used by 17th century pall-bearers are also amongst the exhibits; even a coffin featuring a bell should someone be mistakenly buried alive!
