The former imperial court theatre hosts a program of classic, contemporary and experimental theatre and readings, with an emphasis on Austrian playwrights. Originally designed by Gottfried Semper and Karl Hasenauer and opened in 1888, it has undergone several revamps; improving the acoustics and seating, and modernisation following a fire in 1945. The two vast wings of the building, with their opulent décor, hold colossal staircases leading to the boxes, and are decorated with ceiling paintings by Franz Matsch and Gustav Klimt. Although large, with over 1000 seats it is always worth booking tickets in advance.
