The jewel of Steyr’s beautiful Stadtplatz, or city square, is the late Gothic Bummerlhaus, which is also the best preserved secular building in Upper Austria. Parts of the building date from the 13th century and it was restored to its original style in the 1970’s. The name derives from the time, in the 19th century, when the house was an inn called Zum Goldenen Löwen, the golden lion. Unfortunately the inn sign had the appearance of a small plump dog or Bummerl to the locals.
