Although the Academy was founded in 1692 Peter Strudl, the neo-Renaissance building in which it is housed was completed in 1877 by Theophil Hansen. The main purpose is, of course, teaching, but within the school there are picture and print galleries open to the public. The 15th century ‘The Last Judgement’ by Dutch artist, Hieronymus Bosch along with works by Botticelli, Rubens, Rembrandt and Guardi, as well as former students such as Hundertwasser, are on display amongst the rooms of the picture gallery. The print gallery houses a large collection of drawings, sketches and watercolours.
