The Wolfsgangkirche on the Lienberg, which overlooks Kirchberg, was built around 1400 for the aristocrat Ortolph of Ofenpeck. His statue, and that of his sons, kneeling before St. Wolfgang, can be seen in the north portal. St. Wolfgang was very popular 15th century saint, being the patron of shepherds, boatmen, wood workers, charcoal burners, carpenters, sculptors, innocent prisoners and cattlemen. Unsurprisingly then, the church became a popular place of pilgrimage and refuge in times of trouble. In the 18th century the church lacked nothing in grandeur with a magnificent frescoed interior and Baroque tower dome. Unfortunately, in 1918 it was destroyed by fire after being hit by lightning. Because of its historical significance it was carefully restored later in the century.
