The Welserturm was built 1484 and served as a fortified tower in times of war. In more peaceful times it was a commercial centre for the salt trade. Nowadays it houses a local history museum containing archaeological finds from the Stone Age up to Roman times; from the reign of Tiberius to Marcus Aurelius. Pöchlarn was a Roman settlement from 15 BC onwards when it was one of thirteen fortified camps which protected the Empire’s northern border and the town is a rich source of Roman finds.
