Before the last quarter of the 19th century, Vienna did not have a reliable and safe supply of water. The council decided in 1864 to commission the building of a water supply system which would gather spring water from the Alps. Work was completed in 1873 and, after only three-year construction period, the first Viennese mountain spring water supply was opened on 24 October 1873 with the start-up of the Hochstrahlbrunnen at Schwarzenberg by Emperor Franz Joseph I. Subsequently the system was extended and now accounts for forty percent of Vienna’s needs. The Wasserleitungsmuseum is devoted to documenting the history and construction of the alpine water extraction system.
