For over a thousand years Krems has been one of the most important Austrian centres of viticulture. The Weingut Stadt Krems is a 550 year old wine production enterprise owned by the municipality, making it one of the oldest in Austria if not Europe. The first vineyards were presented to the city in 1210 by Duke Leopold IV of Babenberg and have grown to over 1,000 hectares which are cultivated by hundreds of small wine-growing estates. In 1915, the city acquired the current wine cellar where the local grapes have been pressed ever since and where visitors can try and buy the local vintages.
