The Verduner Altar is considered to be the greatest pre-Gothic artefact in Europe and can be found in the 12th century burial chapel of St. Leoppold in the abbey of Klosterneuburg. The superb winged altarpiece was created by the artist Nicolas of Verdun in 1181 is made of gilded copper with fifty one enamelled plaques. The plaques show the Bible story from the Creation to the end of the New Testament. The last six panels represent the Last Judgement.
