There are 2,657 copper tiles gleaming from the ‘Goldenes Dachl’ which sits atop the building now housing the Maximilianeum. The museum was opened to mark the 500th anniversary of the Golden Roof and displays art and information pertinent to Emperor Maximilian’s life and work. There are some artworks by Maximilian’s court painters and the 2nd floor balcony has a series of scenes depicted in relief including the Emperor and his two wives. The Golden Roof was built in 1490 to cover this balcony whilst the city’s most famous resident observed the street performers below.
