The ruins of Lower Austria’s oldest synagogue date from the early 14th century, after the first Jewish expulsion which took place in 1306. Following the second expulsion in 1420 to 1421, as a result of the "Wiener Gserah", the building came into the possession of the state. In 1470 it was donated to the city of Korneuburg by Emperor Friedrich III. At the end of the 16th century the city leased it to the family Rosenmüller, from whom it received its name, Rossmühle. Legend has it that a horse powered mill was operated by the family in the building. Later in its history the synagogue was used as a salt warehouse.
