Adalbert Stifter (1805 - 1868) became a painter and writer after studying law, mathematics and natural sciences at Vienna university. His first works, published in Budapest, appeared in the middle of the 19th century. The Adalbert-Stifter-Haus, where the writer lived, is now a centre for the study of literature in Upper Austria, dedicated to Stifter’s memory. The building has a gallery, formerly a Linz coffee house, which, besides showing literary and biographical exhibitions, is a meeting place for the Centre. The gallery also hosts multidisciplinary exhibitions exploring the interface between art and literature which are often submitted by younger artists.
