The Martinskirche is thought to be the oldest church in existence in the whole of Austria. It is built on the site of a much older building and was originally constructed in the 8th century AD using material salvaged from Linz’s Roman buildings as evidenced by the Roman gravestones integrated into its walls. In the 11th century the church was remodelled but retains many Romanesque and Gothic features. On the church’s north wall there is a fresco which is copy of one in the temple at the cathedral in Lucca by Matteo Civitali. The interior also boasts other fine architectural features.
