Mathias Zdarsky (1856 - 1940) was a pioneer of alpine skiing who was the first person to publish a systematic skiing text book and more or less kicked off the craze for alpine skiing. The museum, which opened in 1996, traces the development of skis and skiing technique from the introduction around 1890 to the present. The exhibits include lots of winter sports equipment from former times, even before the publication of Zdarsky’s method. Skiing was only one of Zdarsky’s interests and he was also an accomplished painter, philosopher, sculptor and inventor. The museum also has examples of these aspects of his life.
